Application Portfolio
As part of my application to the Professional Designation Program, I was tasked with creating a portfolio that showcased my ability to design and market garments.
The project required me to select a specific brand and present five garments designed for them. Alongside each style, I was to showcase the reference version of a higher-end inspiration.
Additionally, I had to provide price points for both the inspiration and modified versions and the name of the company/brand used as a reference.
This project allowed me to demonstrate my understanding of the fashion industry and my ability to design and market garments for a specific brand and store.
Pre-production for Apparel
This class delved into the intricacies of garment prototype development, from initial concept to final approval before production. I acquired knowledge in creating detailed technical packets that included specifications and fit requirements for various clothing styles. We also learned how to identify and estimate the initial costs of all materials necessary for production.
Throughout the class, I gained hands-on experience by creating four complete technical packs for various garments, including a knit top, a woven top, denim pants, and a skirt. This class provided a comprehensive understanding of the prototype development process and the knowledge to create technical packs that can guide the production process.
Advanced Pre-Production
This class builds upon the concepts learned in the Pre-production for Apparel course, providing a deeper understanding of garment specifications and construction.
A key focus of the class is the analysis of material and construction choices and how they impact the cost of a garment. We created two comprehensive technical packs for a dress and a jacket for a chosen brand, further refining my understanding and ability to create detailed specifications for garments.
By completing this class, I was able to further understand the factors that influence the cost of a garment and how to make strategic choices in the pre-production process.
Trend & Design Application
The Trend & Design Application course provided an in-depth introduction to the creative process of developing fashion apparel for both retail and manufacturing companies. We learned how to conduct comprehensive trend research and translate my ideas into products tailored to specific markets and categories of merchandise.
We had the opportunity to apply our learnings by creating three comprehensive design packets for different target markets. These included: knit tops for the junior market, print dresses for contemporary women over 40, and premium denim for young girls.
This course allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the fashion industry and develop my ability to create products that appeal to specific markets.
Brand Portfolio Development
In this class, we delved into creating original designs for two chosen brands and two distinct market segments to expand the content of our portfolios.
We considered the use of technology as a means to showcase our skill level. The process included market, fabric, and color research and developing between 7 and 10 different garments for each chosen brand. We also developed a merchandising breakdown and created fashion sketches to showcase our designs. This class was a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of the design process and to apply our knowledge to create original designs that cater to specific brands and market segments.
